As stated in my last post, I have been following a diet based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines for the past two weeks. I have noticed that my waist has decreased by 1 – 2 cm (yay!) but want to continue progress and am now starting a 30 day trial at my local gym as well continuing with the eating plan. I have read several articles that state that calorie restriction needs to be approximately 80% of the energy deficit with 20% being from exercise (e.g. these Women’s Health and Huffington Post articles).
However, this article from Fitness Blender disagrees about the 80:20 rule, but does agree both diet and exercise are required. General consensus seems to be that exercise cannot be the sole or main method of weight loss (see article from Independent newspaper and article from Forbes Magazine).
