Sometimes, when people are thinking of making an appointment with a hypnotherapist / psychotherapist, they wonder what the consultation will include, and what they will be expected to do.
Typically, if you make an appointment with me, I will contact you in advance of your first appointment via email or phone to discuss what you wish to achieve. There is also a short form to complete before you attend, or at the first appointment. This gives further details of your goals for the sessions. It asks for some background details, plus information on what you wish to gain from the therapy (e.g. managing weight, decreasing anxiety).
The important fact to remember is that you are in control of what happens with hypnosis, as it is a ‘consent state’. It is my job to help you achieve your goal as easily as possible.
The first consultation usually involves discussing your reasons for therapy in more detail, using what you have put on the form as a starting point. We will also discuss any factors which you think may have contributed to the current circumstances. This could include thinking of how you behave in certain situations, and how you would like to behave. Once this part is completed, I will then work together with you to create a very specific description of what you want to change.
This can be for:
- hypnosis for anxiety
- hypnosis for stress
- hypnosis for weight loss
- hypnosis for smoking
- hypnosis for drinking
As part of this process, I will explain how the conscious and subconscious minds can be used to assist in achieving your goals. During this, I may provide some evidence of the power of your subconscious mind by doing some demonstrations.
When you are ready, you are guided into a relaxed state (called hypnosis), and I will present to you the goals which we have agreed plus the statements which we have worked on together. These will assist you to keep focused on your goals once the session is finished.
Most people find this part (hypnosis) extremely enjoyable and very relaxing. The vast majority of people will be able to hear and remember everything that is said, and the few people who do not remember immediately afterwards will generally find that they remember a short time later.
The last part is to bring you back to full awareness at your own pace (not to ‘wake you up’ as you have not been asleep – just very relaxed!).
I will then check that you are completely back to full awareness, and ensure that you understand any tasks to be done (e.g. I may provide an MP3 recording for you to listen to before the next appointment, or ask you to monitor progress towards your goal).
Hypnotherapy almost always takes more than one session.
I can give you an idea of the number of sessions I recommend in the initial free discussion, once we have talked about what you want to achieve, and any relevant background.
As a guide, most clients have between 3 and 8 sessions for a specific issue.
I hope this has given you a useful overview of the process, but if you have any other questions, please phone me on 0403 932311, or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
